Maryam Omidvar, Iran, who graduated as a MSc in Health Sciences, specialisation Genetic Epidemiology.
Maryam successfully wrote a scientific paper of high quality in a very short time. She investigated the relation between gene variations and smoking cessation and found that our genes determine our ability to stop smoking. The paper received a very favorable review by Pharmacogenetics and Genomics. Maryam deliberately chose Genetic Epidemiology, convinced that the most progress to science will come from this filed.
Professor Johan Mackenbach, Chairman Nihes, presenting the Nihes Award 2008 to Maryam Omidvar.

Mehlika Toy, Turkey, Nihes Doctor of Science graduate 2008, said:
"I am currently a PhD student at the department of Public Health, Erasmus MC. My project is on the burden of Hepatitis B virus, which includes the mathematical modelling of the natural history of the disease and antiviral treatment. I have done a MSc and DSc at the Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences. The education that I followed at Nihes has helped me to become a scientist for population studies. Through the international network that was available, I am working now with several different countries on the burden of Hepatitis B virus. This opportunity has made me even more ambitious about my investigations and future collaborations."
