The research projects in this department focus on public health, health services research and health law.
Within the health services research domain, focus is on comparative research on health systems (international, national), performance measurement and community-based integrated care. The public health projects focus on health equity, ethnicity and health, community intervention, population and risk group screening (e.g. in pregnancy and in families with genetic traits), and the development of health measures at the population’s level, in particular DALYs and QUALYs. Three large cohort studies (SUNSET, LASER and ABCD) located in the Amsterdam population, address ethnical disparities in cardiovascular and perinatal health respectively. Strong ties exist with obstetrical, cardiovascular, internal medicine and genetic departments, and the Municipality’s Health Services (GG&GD Amsterdam). Part of this research is embedded in the unit of Epidemiology in Public Health, established in 2003.
In the health law program emphasis is on patient’s rights, legal aspects of screening and the evaluation of newly introduced medical legislation. Further details: www.amc.nl

Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics
The department focuses on the development and application of the methodology for clinical and biomedical research through an active collaboration in research projects within departments of the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam. The research programme is designed around two research themes: the evaluation of diagnostic procedures and clinimetrics. The initial focus in the first research theme has been on applications of existing methodology to solve clinical questions. More recently, studies were conducted to look at bias in the evaluation of diagnostic procedures due to flaws in the study design. The emphasis within the second theme has been on clinimetrics in neurology, but more recent research projects have focused on the methodology of health status measures and the valuation of health status for medical technology assessment.
